I want to talk to the people who push back on the BLM movement with "All Lives Matter"
please, stop. especially now. now is not the time.
"ALL LIVES"
child lives.
mom's lives.
deaf lives.
special needs lives.
black lives.
white lives.
blue lives.
we get it. you love all people. but to TRULY love people you have to meet them where they are at. and right now the black community does not feel heard, seen, or protected.
so when they're looking at us to love them and you push their feelings, thoughts and experiences to the side you ARE NOT LOVING THEM. you are further confirming what they believe to be true.
So stop whitewashing it. BLACK LIVES MATTER. because until THEY see it and experience it - it does not matter that you love everyone.
A few weeks ago we were all celebrating nurses and doctors and frontline workers but people weren't jumping in to say "but something else matters JUST AS MUCH" because it wasn't the time.
Everyone has a heart for something. Mine is mom's and mine is the deaf community. but now is not the time to put that above the cry of people who just need to know you are in their corner.
Did you know black women are 3-4x more likely to die in childbirth than white woman? As a doula, woman, mom, human - THIS IS NOT OK.
I have many People of Color (POC) friends in my life and in my family. They know I love them and that I believe black lives matter. not everyone out there needs to hear that you value them. but some people do. so if you want to love everyone start with a simple statement.
Black Lives Matter to me.
Or just don't respond that other lives matter, too. Because we know that. No one is accusing you of not loving or liking people. I don't think you NEED to make a social media post about it, either. If nothing else just don't say ALL LIVES MATTER. no matter what: follow it up with your actions.
Learn from my mistake.
A couple of years ago someone said to me a "colored" woman was going to be moving in next to him. and it made me mad. and my heart was pounding. and I thought to myself 'he is old and it doesn't matter if I say anything, he won't change"
and maybe I was right. Maybe my words would have meant nothing. But I could have tried. But I didn't.
I said nothing.
and I am sorry.
I was wrong.
I think about that a lot.
So I promise that when I see or hear any racism I will call it out. with my heart beating and a shaky voice.
